NEW YORK (CBSNewYork) – In over 30 years of making hats, Evetta Petty has amassed a diverse customer base.

Her work has stuck on the heads of everyone, from hip locals to catwalk models to practicing elderly people.

“You know, I have wonderful clients who are 80 years old, and they are still so fabulous,” she said. “I also have the company girls who go to the Conservatory lunch in Central Park, and they go to Veuve Clicquot, to polo matches.”

Goods to Harlem’s Heaven Hat Store, its workshop and retail space, the price ranges from $ 89 for simpler styles to over $ 1,000 for custom designs.

She sources materials from around the world to create dramatic shapes in bold prints.

“I don’t have a formal training as a milliner, so I approach hat design in a very different way. I like to use unconventional materials. I like to say that I will make a hat out of anything, anything I see. It could be an old carpet. I would make a hat out of it, ”she said.

She finds inspiration just by looking out the window.

“I love having my store in Harlem. It’s a neighborhood full of stylish people. We enjoy dressing up and looking good, ”she said. “It’s a city of fashion, and it’s the epicenter. “

For Evetta, a trendy hat isn’t just fun for a gala or a horse race; it also works a kind of magic on an ordinary day.

“When you wear a hat, and it’s a fantastic hat, and you know you’re beautiful, I think people treat you differently,” she said. “It gives the impression that we can do anything. Hats are powerful.
