Giants wear Brandon Belt-inspired captain hats after arriving on IL

SAN FRANCISCO – The Giants will take the pitch without Captain Belt on Tuesday night, and possibly every game the rest of the season. But the best racing joke of the season was still well represented in batting practice on Tuesday.

Four Giants pitchers paid tribute to Brandon Belt by wearing captain’s hats as they played wrestling on Tuesday afternoon and some of the staff wore them as well. Kevin Gausman, Jose Alvarez, Scott Kazmir and Dominic Leone were the only ones to do so, and the hats were also distributed throughout the clubhouse. The Giants also handed them out to fans sitting in the “415” section beyond Triples Alley.

Belt, who was put on IL on Tuesday with a broken left thumb, has become the team’s self-appointed captain since a road trip to Chicago earlier this month. Belt declared during the flight there that he was the team captain, and when Evan Longoria stuck a “C” on the chest of his road jersey, Belt surprised his teammates by wearing it on the field. during a game against the Cubs.

“It really started on the plane the other day,” he said afterwards, sort of keeping a straight face. “I just had the feeling in my heart that I had been the captain all year, so I just told everyone to let me get off the plane first since I was the captain of the team. And they did. When people know you’re the guy, they don’t say anything, they just do. “

The strip only lasted one day, but Belt made a “C” with his hands after some great moments, which he’s had a lot of in recent weeks. On the flight from San Diego to Denver last week, he wore a captain’s outfit and several teammates played along.
