Horses are the stars of the show at the Kentucky Derby, but the number of vibrant and whimsical hats on display at Churchill Downs on Saturday might be the best way to gauge how close the iconic race is to a return to normal.
The general public has not been allowed to attend the Kentucky Derby 2020, which has been delayed for four months due to the COVID-19 pandemic. Hinged hats weren’t completely absent from the race in September – some of the VIP guests of horse owners allowed through the gates of Churchill Downs kept the tradition alive. Still, that pales in comparison to the often colorful and bombastic displays that stain well-dressed crowds on race day.
With restrictions easing for fans to attend the 147th Kentucky Derby, hats are making a comeback.
